Rex Ryan More Involved with the Defense This Year

May 14th, 2012

BroadwayJoe.tv wants you to know that Jets Coach Rex Ryan has made the decision to become more involved with the defense this season, according to the New York Post. After allowing his assistants to take over most of the defensive responsibilities last year, Ryan has decided to return to greater involvement like hisfirst two seasons in New York. The New York Jets Defense remained a top-five unit in 2011 despite Ryan’s decreasedinvolvement, so performance was not truly the issue. A big reason in taking a more active role is to become more involved with his players, having felt that he lost the ‘pulse’ of the team last season. Last season’s chemistry issues occurred mostly on the offensive side. Ryan, however, hopes his increased involvement on defense will make him more attuned to any flare-ups in the locker room that he was unaware of last year. The most notable quarrel, one between quarterback Mark Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes, has seemed to subside. Ryan is taking no chancesthough, as there is no guarantee what this offseason may bring.
Jets veterans, such as linebacker David Harris and cornerback Darrelle Revis, have already noticed their head coach’s presence.
“He’s been in our defensivemeetings a little bit more so far,” Harris told The Post. “It’s still the offseason but in our installs the last two weeks he’s been more hands on coaching little points here and there and asking guys if they understand it, younger guys. I think it’s going to be a plus for us.”
